A router does more different jobs than any other tool in a woodshop, which is why Bosch sells so many of them — and why choosing between models that differ by a single letter is genuinely confusing. Best first router: the 1617EVS. Want plunge capability too: the 1617EVSPK kit. Need a one-handed trim router: the PR20EVS Colt. Best cordless: the GKF18V-25N. Best cheap upgrade: the RA1151 centering tool at $10.
Seven Techniques That Fix Most Routing Problems
These apply to every tool below. A $113 palm router with good habits will outcut a $319 modular system used carelessly.
Sorting Out the Near-Identical Models
The Colt family (PR20EVS, GKF125CEN, GKF125CEK, GKF125CEPK, PR20EVSNK): All 1/4”-shank palm routers with variable speed and soft-start. Buy on power first (1.0 HP vs 1.25 HP), then on which accessories you would otherwise buy separately. The kit versions sometimes undercut the bare tool on price — always check both listings before ordering.
MR23 series vs 1617 series: The MRF23EVS, MRP23EVS and MRC23EVSK are a 2.3 HP, 15-amp modular system with trigger handles, onboard lighting and finer microfine adjustment. The 1617EVS and 1617EVSPK are the same concept at 2.25 HP for less money. Most home shops will not notice the difference in practice; production shops will.
The bit sets: Two 30-piece sets and two 15-piece sets differ mainly by regional catalog and case design. Don’t buy one of each — pick the piece count you need and then the cheaper of the pair on the day you order.

Full-Size Routers
These take 1/2” shank bits, live comfortably in a router table, and have the torque for panel-raising cutters and deep mortises. If you can only own one router, own one of these.

Bosch 1617EVS
The router most small shops end up with. 12-amp motor holds speed through hardwood edge work and rabbets; variable-speed dial matches RPM to bit size; both collets in the box so you aren't locked out of large cutters. Compact enough to use handheld, shaped to drop into a router table.
- Holds speed under load through hardwood and plywood
- Variable speed 8,000–25,000 rpm matches RPM to bit diameter
- Includes 1/4” and 1/2” self-releasing collets
- Precision centering for accurate guided and table work
- Constant Response circuitry maintains speed under changing loads

Bosch 1617EVSPK
Same motor as the 1617EVS with a plunge base, a case, and a quick-clamp system that swaps bases without tools. Covers nearly everything a home shop asks of a router: table work and edge profiles from the fixed base, mortises and template cuts from the plunge base.
- Fixed and plunge bases from one motor
- Tool-free quick-clamp base changes mid-project
- Coarse plus micro-fine depth adjustment on both bases
- Rugged case and drop-forged wrenches included
- Variable speed 8,000–25,000 rpm with soft-start

Bosch MRF23EVS
A step up from the 1617EVS in motor size, with trigger-style handles, onboard LEDs and a microfine depth adjustment that resolves finer increments than the standard fixed base. Happiest as a permanent table motor where the extra amperage shows up on wide profile bits.
- Microfine depth adjustment for repeatable precision
- 15-amp motor for wide profile bits under sustained load
- Trigger-handle design with onboard LED lighting
- Precision centering simplifies template guide work
- Accepts 1/4” and 1/2” collets

Bosch MRP23EVS
The plunge sibling to the MRF23EVS, aimed at deep mortises, panel work and template routing where you need to drop the bit into the middle of a board and return to the same depth every time. Indexed stops handle multi-pass sequencing; microfine adjustment handles the final pass.
- Smooth plunge action with indexed depth stops
- Microfine adjustment for precise final passes
- High-torque 15A motor that holds speed in dense stock
- Precision centering for jig and template work
- LED lighting for visibility at the cut

Bosch MRC23EVSK
The MRF23EVS and MRP23EVS bought together: one 2.3 HP motor, both bases, trigger-operated handles and Afterlock microfine adjustment throughout. Makes sense if you want a single motor covering heavy table work and precision plunge cuts without compromise.
- Fixed and plunge bases with one 2.3 HP motor
- Afterlock micro-fine depth adjustment on both bases
- Trigger controls for improved handling and safety
- Compatible with Bosch template guide systems
- Onboard LED lighting and Constant Response circuitry

Bosch GOF13-25
A mid-size plunge router sitting between the Colt palm routers and the 2.3 HP machines. Light enough for long sessions but with the torque for denser woods. Handle-mounted speed control means you aren’t reaching across the tool mid-cut. Note: no 1/2” collet and a thin review base as a newer model.
- Smooth plunge with indexed depth stops
- Handle-mounted variable speed — no reaching mid-cut
- Detachable parallel and roller guides included
- Dust port keeps the cut line visible
- Light for a plunge router of this power
Corded Palm and Trim Routers
Bosch’s Colt family. All are 1/4” shank, one-handed tools for edge profiles, hinge mortises and laminate work. The differences between models are smaller than the model numbers suggest — see the buying guide above.

Bosch PR20EVS
The original Colt and still the cheapest way into the family. Highest top speed of any router here at 35,000 rpm, which suits small-diameter profiling bits. Micro-fine depth wheel plus top-mounted speed dial keep adjustments quick between passes. One-handed control is the whole point.
- Compact palm grip for one-handed control
- Highest top speed here at 35,000 rpm for small profile bits
- Micro-fine depth adjustment wheel
- Aluminum fixed base for stable repeatable setups
- Constant Response circuitry and soft-start electronics

Bosch GKF125CEN
The higher-output Colt, rated 1.25 HP max against the PR20EVS’s 1.0 HP, on the PR101 fixed base with a centerable round sub-base. The extra power shows in hardwood roundovers; the extra weight shows over a long session.
- More output than the PR20EVS in the same form factor
- Macro and micro depth adjustment
- Centerable round sub-base for accurate guidance
- Soft-start and Constant Response electronics
- PR101 base for stable, repeatable setups

Bosch GKF125CEK
The same 1.25 HP Colt as the GKF125CEN, sold as a kit with a straight-edge guide and a case. If listed prices hold, the kit sometimes costs less than the bare router — check both listings before you buy, because that pricing flips around regularly.
- Same 1.25 HP motor as the CEN, with accessories
- Straight-edge guide included for long straight runs
- Macro and micro depth adjustments
- Case for transport and storage
- Kit pricing sometimes undercuts the bare tool — always check both

Bosch GKF125CEPK
The Colt with a plunge base added, which unlocks shallow mortises, inlay pockets and template work that a fixed base can’t start. The quick-clamp motor transfer makes swapping bases fast enough that you’ll actually do it mid-project.
- Fixed and plunge bases for one compact motor
- Tool-free quick-clamp base changes
- Macro and micro depth adjustment on both bases
- Straight-edge guide and carrying case included
- Unlocks inlay and template work from a palm-sized package

Bosch PR20EVSNK
The installer’s kit: the 1.0 HP Colt motor with the widest set of bases and guides in the family. If you are doing site work where you can’t predict what base you need — offset, tilt, underscribe — this saves trips back to the shop. For bench work it is more kit than most people need.
- Widest base and guide selection of the Colt kits
- Variable speed with micro-fine depth control
- Soft-start and Constant Response electronics
- Built around installer and trim carpenter workflows
- Offset, tilt, and underscribe bases included
Cordless Routers
Battery routers have closed most of the gap on trim work. All three below are sold as bare tools — factor in battery and charger costs before comparing prices with the corded models.

Bosch GKF18V-25N
The cordless Colt, and the closest thing here to corded performance without a cord. Brushless motor delivers a strong power-to-size ratio; dual dust adapters and a chip shield keep the cut line visible; accepts existing Colt accessories. Sold bare — battery and charger are extra.
- Strong power-to-size ratio for a cordless router
- Brushless motor for efficiency and tool longevity
- Two dust adapters plus chip shield keep the cut line clear
- Depth adjustment in 1/64” increments
- Accepts existing Colt palm-router accessories

Bosch GLF18V-25N
A dedicated laminate trimmer rather than a general-purpose router. The slim grip suits long one-handed edge passes; the transparent sub-base lets you watch the bit meet the line; roller and parallel guides plus dust hoods come in the box. Less power than the GKF18V-25N, and that is deliberate.
- Transparent sub-base for a clear view of the cut
- Roller and parallel guides included in the box
- Brushless motor for efficient runtime
- Dust hoods and adapters included
- Slim grip for long one-handed edge passes

Bosch GKF12V-25N
The smallest router in this guide, built on Bosch’s 12V platform with an offset grip that keeps your hand over the workpiece instead of out past the edge. That geometry is the reason to buy it: on narrow face frames it is more stable than a conventional palm router. No dust collection.
- Offset design keeps the tool stable over narrow stock
- EC brushless motor for runtime and longevity
- Fast macro and fine depth adjustment
- Lightest tool here for extended one-handed use
- 12V platform — fits Bosch 12V battery ecosystem
Router Tables
A table turns the router upside down and gives you a fence and a flat reference surface. It is the single biggest accuracy upgrade available for repeatable profiles and joinery.

Bosch RA1181
The aluminum-topped benchtop table to buy if you want a flat, rigid reference surface without building your own. Tall fence with adjustable MDF faceplates handles raised panels and door work; pre-drilled plate allows above-table height adjustment; 2-1/2” port connects to a shop vacuum.
- Rigid aluminum worktop stays flat under heavy use
- Tall fence with adjustable MDF faceplates for raised panels
- Pre-drilled plate for above-table router height adjustment
- 2-1/2” dust port connects to standard shop vacuum
- Most-reviewed Bosch router table with 5,100+ owner reports

Bosch RA1171
The cabinet-style option: a laminated MDF top on an enclosed base that adds storage and damps vibration. Aluminum mounting plate makes router swaps straightforward; dual dust ports pull chips from both the fence and below the table, which matters when running large panel-raising bits.
- Cabinet base adds storage and damps vibration
- Aluminum mounting plate suits frequent router swaps
- Dual dust ports for better extraction on big bits
- Adjustable fence with outfeed shims
- Enclosed design protects hardware from chip buildup

Bosch RA1141
The portable one. Folding legs, onboard storage and an Easy Click mount that gets a router on and off in seconds, plus dual featherboards and a bit-height gauge to speed setup. Trade-off is a smaller, lighter platform — long or heavy stock needs support.
- Easy Click mount for fast router attachment
- Folding legs and onboard storage
- Dual featherboards and bit-height gauge included
- 2-1/2” dust port
- Most portable Bosch table option
Bases, Guides and Jigs
The accessories that decide whether your cuts land where you intended. Cheap relative to the routers, and easy to overlook.

Bosch RA1161
A second fixed base for a 1617-series motor. The point is that you leave this one bolted to your table plate permanently and move the motor between it and your handheld base, instead of unbolting the plate every time. Above-table wrench access means height changes without crawling underneath.
- Above-table wrench access for quick height changes
- Fits 1617/1618 series motors and common table plates
- Leaves your handheld base set up and untouched
- Smooth, stable height travel
- Saves unbolting and re-mounting every session

Bosch RA1054
An edge guide that does three jobs: steers non-piloted bits along an edge, converts to a circle guide for arcs up to 32 inches, and carries a dust hood with vacuum adapters. Being able to work up to 8 inches in from an edge is what separates it from the basic guides bundled with routers.
- Guides non-piloted bits up to 8” from the edge
- Converts to a circle guide for arcs to 32”
- Dust hood and multi-size vacuum adapter included
- Adjustable rods for lateral support on long runs
- Works across different router brands with minor adjustment

Bosch RA1128
Template guides are what let a router follow a jig, and this set covers the common sizes plus dovetail and radius hinge guides. The important part is the RA1100 interface: it accepts industry-standard threaded bushings, so jigs from other manufacturers work with your Bosch router.
- Covers dovetail and radius hinge profiles
- Quick-change adapter speeds guide swaps mid-project
- RA1100 interface accepts threaded guides from other brands
- Works handheld or table-mounted
- Most complete starter set for Bosch-platform jig work

Bosch RA1151
The cheapest item here and the one most likely to fix a problem you didn’t know you had. If your sub-base isn’t concentric with the bit, every guided cut is off by that error — and it compounds when you rotate the router. The pin goes in the collet, the cone seats the sub-base, tighten the screws, done.
- Fast, repeatable sub-base centering in minutes
- Works with both 1/4” and 1/2” collets
- Two-piece sliding design is easier than solid pins
- Costs less than the scrap one misaligned cut wastes
- Steel pin and cone hold up to repeated use
Router Bit Sets
Sharp carbide does more for cut quality than any amount of router horsepower. Note that the two 30-piece sets and two 15-piece sets below are near-duplicates — read the buying guide above before choosing.

Bosch RBS030MBS
The broadest set here, covering flush trim, rabbets, roundovers, ogees, coves and straight bits in one case. Micrograin carbide holds an edge substantially longer than plain steel, which matters most on plywood and MDF where abrasive glue lines kill cheap bits fast.
- Wide profile range for joinery and decorative work
- Micrograin carbide tips for longer edge life
- Hardened shanks for a secure, low-runout fit
- Organized case protects the cutting edges
- Highest-rated bit set here with 1,100+ reviews

Bosch 30-Piece Professional Set
Bosch’s Professional-line 30-piece set (part 2607017476), which overlaps heavily with the RBS030MBS — same 1/4” shank format, comparable carbide, similar profile spread. Compare the actual profile lists and the current prices rather than assuming one is the upgrade. Pick whichever is cheaper on the day you order.
- Broad profile range in 1/4” shank
- Carbide edges for longer life and cleaner finishes
- Case with easy-pick layout for fast selection
- Large review base behind it
- Professional-line quality control

Bosch RBS015MBS
The 15-piece version of the RBS030MBS: the profiles most people actually reach for, without paying for the specialty cutters that stay in the case. Same micrograin carbide and tempered shanks, smaller footprint on the shelf.
- Covers the profiles used most often in edge and trim work
- Micrograin carbide tips for longer edge life
- Tempered steel shanks for a secure fit
- Compact case for storage and transport
- Good starting set before committing to a 30-piece

Bosch 15-Piece Professional Set
The Professional-line 15-piece set (part 2607017473), the counterpart to the RBS015MBS. Flush trim, chamfer, groove and profile cutters on 1/4” shanks — the working core of a bit collection. Pairs especially well with palm and trim routers where 1/2” shank isn’t an option.
- Core profiles for edge work and joinery on 1/4” shank
- Carbide cutters for longer life and cleaner finish
- Case with easy-pick layout
- Large review base for confidence
- Best pairing with palm and trim routers
