Which Bosch router should I buy first?

If you can only own one, buy a full-size fixed-base router — the 1617EVS is the standard answer. It handles table work, takes 1/2” shank bits, and does everything a palm router does, just less comfortably. If you already have a full-size router and mostly do edge work, a Colt palm router is the better second purchase: you will reach for it constantly. The PR20EVS is the cheapest Colt entry.

What is the difference between the 1617EVS and the 1617EVSPK?

The 1617EVSPK adds a plunge base, a carrying case, a quick-clamp base-swap system and coarse-plus-micro-fine depth adjustment to the same 2.25 HP motor as the 1617EVS. If you want plunge capability now or even later, buy the EVSPK kit and avoid buying a second router down the road. If you only ever work table-mounted, the 1617EVS saves the cost of the extra base.

Do I need a 1/2” collet?
