Bosch Router Guide (2026) — 25 Routers, Tables, and Bit Sets Compared

✍️ Pro Woodworking Guides📅 August 2026 📚 15 min readPrices checked August 2026

A router does more different jobs than any other tool in a woodshop, which is why Bosch sells so many of them — and why choosing between models that differ by a single letter is genuinely confusing. Best first router: the 1617EVS. Want plunge capability too: the 1617EVSPK kit. Need a one-handed trim router: the PR20EVS Colt. Best cordless: the GKF18V-25N. Best cheap upgrade: the RA1151 centering tool at $10.

Seven Techniques That Fix Most Routing Problems

These apply to every tool below. A $113 palm router with good habits will outcut a $319 modular system used carelessly.

1. Take shallow passes. The biggest cause of burning, chatter and blown-out edges is removing too much in one go. Aim for about 1/8” per pass in softwood and less in hardwood. Let the last pass be a light whisper cut that cleans up everything the roughing passes left behind.
2. Match RPM to bit diameter. Large-diameter cutters need slower speeds; small profile bits want the top of the range. Running a big bit fast burns the wood and stresses the bit; running a small bit slow leaves a ragged surface. The speed dial is there for a reason.
3. Feed against the cutter’s rotation. Handheld on an outside edge: move left to right. On a router table: feed stock right to left against the fence. Going the wrong way is a climb cut — the bit grabs the work and pulls the router along the edge. This is how most beginners lose control.
4. Read the grain before the cut. Tear-out happens where the cutter lifts fibers instead of slicing them. Rout end grain first on a four-sided profile so the following long-grain passes clean up any blowout, and back up the exit corner with a scrap block.
5. Let the jig do the accuracy. Freehand routing is for rough work. Anything repeatable wants a fence, edge guide, template with a bearing-guided bit, or a bushing running against a jig. Set the jig once and every part comes out identical.
6. Check the collet first. Insert the bit fully, then back it out roughly 1/8” before tightening — the shank should not bottom out against the collet floor. Keep the collet and shank clean; pitch buildup causes slippage. Never tighten an empty collet.
7. Manage dust at the source. Routing MDF and plywood produces fine dust in volume. Connect the dust port when there is one, wear a proper mask when there isn’t, and keep the cut line clear so you can see where the bit is going. Eye and ear protection are not optional at 25,000 rpm.

Sorting Out the Near-Identical Models

The Colt family (PR20EVS, GKF125CEN, GKF125CEK, GKF125CEPK, PR20EVSNK): All 1/4”-shank palm routers with variable speed and soft-start. Buy on power first (1.0 HP vs 1.25 HP), then on which accessories you would otherwise buy separately. The kit versions sometimes undercut the bare tool on price — always check both listings before ordering.

MR23 series vs 1617 series: The MRF23EVS, MRP23EVS and MRC23EVSK are a 2.3 HP, 15-amp modular system with trigger handles, onboard lighting and finer microfine adjustment. The 1617EVS and 1617EVSPK are the same concept at 2.25 HP for less money. Most home shops will not notice the difference in practice; production shops will.

The bit sets: Two 30-piece sets and two 15-piece sets differ mainly by regional catalog and case design. Don’t buy one of each — pick the piece count you need and then the cheaper of the pair on the day you order.

Bosch 1617EVS

Bosch 1617EVS

4.8/5 (3,548 reviews)  ·  Fixed base  ·  2.25 HP, 12A, 8,000–25,000 rpm, 1/4”+1/2” collets

The router most small shops end up with. 12-amp motor holds speed through hardwood edge work and rabbets; variable-speed dial matches RPM to bit size; both collets in the box so you aren't locked out of large cutters. Compact enough to use handheld, shaped to drop into a router table.

Best for: Table-mounted profiling, rabbets and dadoes, general shop work, first full-size router.
Skip if: You need plunge capability — get the 1617EVSPK kit instead of buying a second router later.
  • Holds speed under load through hardwood and plywood
  • Variable speed 8,000–25,000 rpm matches RPM to bit diameter
  • Includes 1/4” and 1/2” self-releasing collets
  • Precision centering for accurate guided and table work
  • Constant Response circuitry maintains speed under changing loads
What owners say: Owners consistently point to smooth, steady power delivery and how well it behaves in a table, with soft-start and the speed dial getting frequent mention. Recurring complaints are minimal included accessories and occasional cosmetic shipping scuffs.

Bosch 1617EVSPK

Bosch 1617EVSPK

4.8/5 (4,990 reviews)  ·  Fixed + plunge  ·  2.25 HP, 12A, 8,000–25,000 rpm, both bases, quick-clamp

Same motor as the 1617EVS with a plunge base, a case, and a quick-clamp system that swaps bases without tools. Covers nearly everything a home shop asks of a router: table work and edge profiles from the fixed base, mortises and template cuts from the plunge base.

Best for: One router that has to do everything — table work, mortising, cabinetry, moulding.
Skip if: You already own a plunge router, or you only ever work table-mounted.
  • Fixed and plunge bases from one motor
  • Tool-free quick-clamp base changes mid-project
  • Coarse plus micro-fine depth adjustment on both bases
  • Rugged case and drop-forged wrenches included
  • Variable speed 8,000–25,000 rpm with soft-start
What owners say: Reviewers single out the depth adjustment system for multi-pass accuracy and the motor for staying steady under load. The case and drop-forged wrenches get repeated praise. Main gripe is weight when moving the kit around the shop.
Bosch MRF23EVS

Bosch MRF23EVS

4.4/5 (198 reviews)  ·  Fixed base  ·  2.3 HP, 15A, 10,000–25,000 rpm, trigger handles, LED, microfine

A step up from the 1617EVS in motor size, with trigger-style handles, onboard LEDs and a microfine depth adjustment that resolves finer increments than the standard fixed base. Happiest as a permanent table motor where the extra amperage shows up on wide profile bits.

Best for: Dedicated router-table motor, heavy profile bits, frequent template work.
Skip if: You are price-sensitive — the 1617EVS covers most of the same ground for $50 less.
  • Microfine depth adjustment for repeatable precision
  • 15-amp motor for wide profile bits under sustained load
  • Trigger-handle design with onboard LED lighting
  • Precision centering simplifies template guide work
  • Accepts 1/4” and 1/2” collets
What owners say: Buyers describe steady power delivery in a table setup and value the microfine depth control and precision centering for template guides. Handle-mounted controls and LED lighting are called out as safety and visibility wins. Several note the weight and advise checking mounting alignment during setup.
Bosch MRP23EVS

Bosch MRP23EVS

4.6/5 (297 reviews)  ·  Plunge base  ·  2.3 HP, 15A, 10,000–25,000 rpm, indexed stops, microfine

The plunge sibling to the MRF23EVS, aimed at deep mortises, panel work and template routing where you need to drop the bit into the middle of a board and return to the same depth every time. Indexed stops handle multi-pass sequencing; microfine adjustment handles the final pass.

Best for: Deep mortises in dense stock, speaker and panel cutouts, jig-driven template work.
Skip if: Most of your work happens on an edge — a fixed base is lighter and easier to control there.
  • Smooth plunge action with indexed depth stops
  • Microfine adjustment for precise final passes
  • High-torque 15A motor that holds speed in dense stock
  • Precision centering for jig and template work
  • LED lighting for visibility at the cut
What owners say: Owners praise the smooth plunge mechanism and how predictable deep cuts feel in dense woods, plus the microfine adjustment. Two consistent caveats: the plunge can feel stiff until it breaks in, and it is heavy to move around the shop.
Bosch MRC23EVSK

Bosch MRC23EVSK

4.4/5 (729 reviews)  ·  Fixed + plunge modular  ·  2.3 HP, 15A, both bases, Afterlock microfine, trigger controls

The MRF23EVS and MRP23EVS bought together: one 2.3 HP motor, both bases, trigger-operated handles and Afterlock microfine adjustment throughout. Makes sense if you want a single motor covering heavy table work and precision plunge cuts without compromise.

Best for: A shop that wants professional-grade power in both configurations from one motor.
Skip if: The 1617EVSPK already covers your work — it’s the same idea for $40 less at lower amperage.
  • Fixed and plunge bases with one 2.3 HP motor
  • Afterlock micro-fine depth adjustment on both bases
  • Trigger controls for improved handling and safety
  • Compatible with Bosch template guide systems
  • Onboard LED lighting and Constant Response circuitry
What owners say: Users praise the combination of power and control, noting the router holds speed through heavy cuts and that trigger handles improve ergonomics. Microfine depth adjustment and precision centering get called out for table and template routing. Some mention the weight and noticeable vibration at the top of the speed range.
Bosch GOF13-25

Bosch GOF13-25

4.4/5 (32 reviews)  ·  Mid-size plunge  ·  1.75 HP, 11,000–28,000 rpm, detachable parallel guide, dust port

A mid-size plunge router sitting between the Colt palm routers and the 2.3 HP machines. Light enough for long sessions but with the torque for denser woods. Handle-mounted speed control means you aren’t reaching across the tool mid-cut. Note: no 1/2” collet and a thin review base as a newer model.

Best for: Signmaking, mortises, panel work, anyone who wants plunge capability without the weight of a 15-amp router.
Skip if: You need a 1/2” collet for large cutters, or you want a long review history before buying.
  • Smooth plunge with indexed depth stops
  • Handle-mounted variable speed — no reaching mid-cut
  • Detachable parallel and roller guides included
  • Dust port keeps the cut line visible
  • Light for a plunge router of this power
What owners say: Users praise the smooth plunge action and comfortable ergonomics, and the dust connection for keeping the cut line visible. The two flagged shortcomings are a plunge that feels stiff at first and the absence of a 1/2” collet. Worth noting: this is a newer model with a thin review base, so long-term reports are limited.

Corded Palm and Trim Routers

Bosch’s Colt family. All are 1/4” shank, one-handed tools for edge profiles, hinge mortises and laminate work. The differences between models are smaller than the model numbers suggest — see the buying guide above.

Bosch PR20EVS

4.6/5 (3,495 reviews)  ·  Palm, fixed base  ·  1.0 HP, 5.6A, 16,000–35,000 rpm, micro-fine depth wheel

The original Colt and still the cheapest way into the family. Highest top speed of any router here at 35,000 rpm, which suits small-diameter profiling bits. Micro-fine depth wheel plus top-mounted speed dial keep adjustments quick between passes. One-handed control is the whole point.

Best for: Hinge mortises, chamfers, laminate trimming, decorative edge profiles.
Skip if: You want a plunge base or a case — the kit versions include them.
  • Compact palm grip for one-handed control
  • Highest top speed here at 35,000 rpm for small profile bits
  • Micro-fine depth adjustment wheel
  • Aluminum fixed base for stable repeatable setups
  • Constant Response circuitry and soft-start electronics
What owners say: Owners repeatedly call it more powerful than its size suggests and praise the balance for hinge mortises, chamfers and trim. The micro-adjust wheel and speed dial get credit for clean profiles. Common complaints: dust management is fiddly, and bit changes take some getting used to.
Bosch GKF125CEN

Bosch GKF125CEN

4.7/5 (1,170 reviews)  ·  Palm, fixed base (1.25 HP)  ·  1.25 HP max, PR101 fixed base, centerable sub-base

The higher-output Colt, rated 1.25 HP max against the PR20EVS’s 1.0 HP, on the PR101 fixed base with a centerable round sub-base. The extra power shows in hardwood roundovers; the extra weight shows over a long session.

Best for: Heavier trim work, hardwood roundovers, shops that want a Colt with more headroom.
Skip if: You are doing light laminate work all day — the lighter PR20EVS is less tiring.
  • More output than the PR20EVS in the same form factor
  • Macro and micro depth adjustment
  • Centerable round sub-base for accurate guidance
  • Soft-start and Constant Response electronics
  • PR101 base for stable, repeatable setups
What owners say: Owners praise the balance and describe it as a clear step up from smaller trim tools, with the depth controls and speed dial helping dial in clean profiles. The PR101 base earns credit for repeatable setups. Several note it is heavier than the 1.0 HP version, which matters over extended use.
Bosch GKF125CEK

Bosch GKF125CEK

4.7/5 (556 reviews)  ·  Palm kit (1.25 HP + guide + case)  ·  1.25 HP max, straight-edge guide, case

The same 1.25 HP Colt as the GKF125CEN, sold as a kit with a straight-edge guide and a case. If listed prices hold, the kit sometimes costs less than the bare router — check both listings before you buy, because that pricing flips around regularly.

Best for: Anyone buying a 1.25 HP Colt who also wants the edge guide and case.
Skip if: You already own guides and a case, and the bare tool is cheaper on the day you buy.
  • Same 1.25 HP motor as the CEN, with accessories
  • Straight-edge guide included for long straight runs
  • Macro and micro depth adjustments
  • Case for transport and storage
  • Kit pricing sometimes undercuts the bare tool — always check both
What owners say: Users praise the balance and feel for delicate edge work and quick mortises, plus steady speed control under load. The included guide and case get called out for portability. A few mention longer shipping times and minor setup quirks.
Bosch GKF125CEPK

Bosch GKF125CEPK

4.8/5 (485 reviews)  ·  Palm, fixed + plunge bases  ·  1.25 HP max, quick-clamp, both bases, edge guide, case

The Colt with a plunge base added, which unlocks shallow mortises, inlay pockets and template work that a fixed base can’t start. The quick-clamp motor transfer makes swapping bases fast enough that you’ll actually do it mid-project.

Best for: Inlay and small mortise work, anyone who wants palm-router finesse plus plunge capability.
Skip if: You need real plunge depth and power — a mid-size plunge router is the better buy at this price.
  • Fixed and plunge bases for one compact motor
  • Tool-free quick-clamp base changes
  • Macro and micro depth adjustment on both bases
  • Straight-edge guide and carrying case included
  • Unlocks inlay and template work from a palm-sized package
What owners say: Owners describe it as palm-router convenience with plunge-base control, and single out the quick-clamp as a genuine time saver. Value versus buying bases separately comes up often. A handful mention minor setup quirks.
Bosch PR20EVSNK

Bosch PR20EVSNK

4.4/5 (190 reviews)  ·  Palm multi-base installer kit  ·  1.0 HP, widest base selection, offset, tilt, underscribe

The installer’s kit: the 1.0 HP Colt motor with the widest set of bases and guides in the family. If you are doing site work where you can’t predict what base you need — offset, tilt, underscribe — this saves trips back to the shop. For bench work it is more kit than most people need.

Best for: Installers and trim carpenters working on site with varied base requirements.
Skip if: You work at a bench — the PR20EVS motor alone is less than half the price.
  • Widest base and guide selection of the Colt kits
  • Variable speed with micro-fine depth control
  • Soft-start and Constant Response electronics
  • Built around installer and trim carpenter workflows
  • Offset, tilt, and underscribe bases included
What owners say: Buyers value the accessory range and the predictable control in a small package, with the depth adjustment and speed dial highlighted for clean profiles and hinge mortises. Several mention setup quirks around base clamping and suggest checking fit during initial assembly.

Cordless Routers

Battery routers have closed most of the gap on trim work. All three below are sold as bare tools — factor in battery and charger costs before comparing prices with the corded models.

⚡ Best CordlessScore: 87/100
Bosch GKF18V-25N

Bosch GKF18V-25N

4.6/5 (93 reviews)  ·  Cordless palm (18V)  ·  18V brushless, 1.39 peak HP, 10,000–30,000 rpm, bare tool

The cordless Colt, and the closest thing here to corded performance without a cord. Brushless motor delivers a strong power-to-size ratio; dual dust adapters and a chip shield keep the cut line visible; accepts existing Colt accessories. Sold bare — battery and charger are extra.

Best for: Site work, tight spaces, surface routing and trimming away from an outlet.
Skip if: You are not already on Bosch 18V — batteries and a charger add substantially to the price.
  • Strong power-to-size ratio for a cordless router
  • Brushless motor for efficiency and tool longevity
  • Two dust adapters plus chip shield keep the cut line clear
  • Depth adjustment in 1/64” increments
  • Accepts existing Colt palm-router accessories
What owners say: Owners note how much capability fits in the package and praise the balance for edge-forming and tight work. Dust extraction options and chip shield get positive mentions, as does compatibility with existing Colt accessories. The usual cordless caveats about battery choice and runtime apply, and the review base is still small.
Bosch GLF18V-25N

Bosch GLF18V-25N

4.8/5 (27 reviews)  ·  Cordless laminate trimmer (18V)  ·  18V brushless, 0.8 HP equiv., roller + parallel guides, bare tool

A dedicated laminate trimmer rather than a general-purpose router. The slim grip suits long one-handed edge passes; the transparent sub-base lets you watch the bit meet the line; roller and parallel guides plus dust hoods come in the box. Less power than the GKF18V-25N, and that is deliberate.

Best for: Laminate and veneer trimming, flush trim work, fine detail passes.
Skip if: You want one cordless router for everything — the GKF18V-25N has more headroom.
  • Transparent sub-base for a clear view of the cut
  • Roller and parallel guides included in the box
  • Brushless motor for efficient runtime
  • Dust hoods and adapters included
  • Slim grip for long one-handed edge passes
What owners say: Owners praise the control available from such a compact tool and the visibility through the clear base. The included dust extraction accessories and the build quality for trim tasks get repeated mentions. Batteries and chargers are sold separately, and the review base is very small so far.
Bosch GKF12V-25N

Bosch GKF12V-25N

4.6/5 (476 reviews)  ·  Cordless edge router (12V)  ·  12V brushless, offset grip, fast macro + fine depth, bare tool

The smallest router in this guide, built on Bosch’s 12V platform with an offset grip that keeps your hand over the workpiece instead of out past the edge. That geometry is the reason to buy it: on narrow face frames it is more stable than a conventional palm router. No dust collection.

Best for: Flush trimming face frames, small roundovers, quick chamfers in tight spots.
Skip if: You need dust extraction or more than light trim capability.
  • Offset design keeps the tool stable over narrow stock
  • EC brushless motor for runtime and longevity
  • Fast macro and fine depth adjustment
  • Lightest tool here for extended one-handed use
  • 12V platform — fits Bosch 12V battery ecosystem
What owners say: Buyers praise the ergonomics and balance and describe it as surprisingly capable for a 12V tool, with good runtime on current batteries. Easy depth adjustment gets frequent mention. The consistent drawback is the lack of built-in dust collection, and battery and charger are sold separately.

Router Tables

A table turns the router upside down and gives you a fence and a flat reference surface. It is the single biggest accuracy upgrade available for repeatable profiles and joinery.

💰 Best Router TableScore: 86/100
Bosch RA1181

Bosch RA1181

4.5/5 (5,129 reviews)  ·  Benchtop router table  ·  Aluminum top, tall fence, adjustable MDF faceplates, 2-1/2” dust port

The aluminum-topped benchtop table to buy if you want a flat, rigid reference surface without building your own. Tall fence with adjustable MDF faceplates handles raised panels and door work; pre-drilled plate allows above-table height adjustment; 2-1/2” port connects to a shop vacuum.

Best for: Raised panels, door and moulding runs, repeatable profiles on longer stock.
Skip if: You need to move it constantly — the RA1141 folds and this doesn’t.
  • Rigid aluminum worktop stays flat under heavy use
  • Tall fence with adjustable MDF faceplates for raised panels
  • Pre-drilled plate for above-table router height adjustment
  • 2-1/2” dust port connects to standard shop vacuum
  • Most-reviewed Bosch router table with 5,100+ owner reports
What owners say: Owners describe the aluminum top and fence as a major upgrade over a shop-made table, and note good compatibility across router brands. The consistent caveat is that it takes real time to assemble and level correctly — but once dialed in, results are repeatable.
Bosch RA1171

Bosch RA1171

4.4/5 (1,986 reviews)  ·  Cabinet-style benchtop table  ·  Laminated MDF top, enclosed cabinet base, dual dust ports, aluminum mounting plate

The cabinet-style option: a laminated MDF top on an enclosed base that adds storage and damps vibration. Aluminum mounting plate makes router swaps straightforward; dual dust ports pull chips from both the fence and below the table, which matters when running large panel-raising bits.

Best for: Large panel work, heavy bits, a permanent bench station with storage.
Skip if: Bench space is tight or you need portability — it is heavy and meant to stay put.
  • Cabinet base adds storage and damps vibration
  • Aluminum mounting plate suits frequent router swaps
  • Dual dust ports for better extraction on big bits
  • Adjustable fence with outfeed shims
  • Enclosed design protects hardware from chip buildup
What owners say: Owners praise the solid build and the aluminum mounting plate for straightforward router alignment, and rate it good value for large panel bits and repeatable work. Assembly instructions get positive mentions. Common notes: it is heavy to move, and careful leveling is essential.

Bosch RA1141

Bosch RA1141

4.4/5 (1,307 reviews)  ·  Portable benchtop table  ·  Easy Click mount, folding legs, dual featherboards, 2-1/2” port

The portable one. Folding legs, onboard storage and an Easy Click mount that gets a router on and off in seconds, plus dual featherboards and a bit-height gauge to speed setup. Trade-off is a smaller, lighter platform — long or heavy stock needs support.

Best for: Small shops, job sites, anyone who has to pack the table away between sessions.
Skip if: You run large panel bits or long stock regularly — go with the RA1181 or RA1171.
  • Easy Click mount for fast router attachment
  • Folding legs and onboard storage
  • Dual featherboards and bit-height gauge included
  • 2-1/2” dust port
  • Most portable Bosch table option
What owners say: Owners rate portability and quick setup as the main advantages, and praise the fence, featherboards and clear instructions. The consistent criticism is that the plastic miter gauge and some trim pieces feel light-duty. Results are solid once the table is leveled and adjusted.

Bases, Guides and Jigs

The accessories that decide whether your cuts land where you intended. Cheap relative to the routers, and easy to overlook.

Bosch RA1161

Bosch RA1161

4.4/5 (165 reviews)  ·  Fixed base (table)  ·  For 1617/1618 series, above-table wrench access

A second fixed base for a 1617-series motor. The point is that you leave this one bolted to your table plate permanently and move the motor between it and your handheld base, instead of unbolting the plate every time. Above-table wrench access means height changes without crawling underneath.

Best for: Anyone with a 1617-series router who wants a permanently mounted table base.
Skip if: You have a router lift, or you don’t own a 1617/1618 motor.
  • Above-table wrench access for quick height changes
  • Fits 1617/1618 series motors and common table plates
  • Leaves your handheld base set up and untouched
  • Smooth, stable height travel
  • Saves unbolting and re-mounting every session
What owners say: Owners report it matches original equipment quality and fits well in router tables, with smooth height adjustment and above-table wrench access saving setup time. A small number mention retaining-ring or initial fit issues that careful installation resolves.

Bosch RA1054

4.7/5 (4,812 reviews)  ·  Edge guide + circle jig  ·  Up to 8” from edge, converts to 32” circle guide, dust hood + vacuum adapters

An edge guide that does three jobs: steers non-piloted bits along an edge, converts to a circle guide for arcs up to 32 inches, and carries a dust hood with vacuum adapters. Being able to work up to 8 inches in from an edge is what separates it from the basic guides bundled with routers.

Best for: Dadoes and grooves away from the edge, circle cutting, chamfers with non-piloted bits.
Skip if: You only use bearing-guided bits on outside edges.
  • Guides non-piloted bits up to 8” from the edge
  • Converts to a circle guide for arcs to 32”
  • Dust hood and multi-size vacuum adapter included
  • Adjustable rods for lateral support on long runs
  • Works across different router brands with minor adjustment
What owners say: Owners praise the dust hood and the reach it gives you from the edge, and value the pivot plate for consistent arcs. It works across different routers, sometimes after small adjustments. Setup is fiddly the first time, and reviewers advise care when tensioning the retaining bolts.
Bosch RA1128

Bosch RA1128

4.6/5 (2,526 reviews)  ·  Template guide set (8-piece)  ·  Dovetail + radius hinge guides, RA1100 interface for threaded bushings

Template guides are what let a router follow a jig, and this set covers the common sizes plus dovetail and radius hinge guides. The important part is the RA1100 interface: it accepts industry-standard threaded bushings, so jigs from other manufacturers work with your Bosch router.

Best for: Hinge mortising jigs, dovetail jigs, any template-driven joinery.
Skip if: All your work is bearing-guided or fence-guided.
  • Covers dovetail and radius hinge profiles
  • Quick-change adapter speeds guide swaps mid-project
  • RA1100 interface accepts threaded guides from other brands
  • Works handheld or table-mounted
  • Most complete starter set for Bosch-platform jig work
What owners say: Buyers value the completeness and compatibility, noting the set usually has the guide needed for small joinery and hinge work, and that the adapter accepts other brands’ threaded guides. A few warn that guide pins can overheat in heavy use and recommend practicing on scrap first.

4.7/5 (2,824 reviews)  ·  Centering sub-base alignment tool  ·  Works with 1/4” or 1/2” collets, two-piece sliding design

The cheapest item here and the one most likely to fix a problem you didn’t know you had. If your sub-base isn’t concentric with the bit, every guided cut is off by that error — and it compounds when you rotate the router. The pin goes in the collet, the cone seats the sub-base, tighten the screws, done.

Best for: Anyone mounting a new sub-base, router plate, or template guide. Everyone, at this price.
Skip if: Nothing — at $10.25, if you do guided work at all, buy this.
  • Fast, repeatable sub-base centering in minutes
  • Works with both 1/4” and 1/2” collets
  • Two-piece sliding design is easier than solid pins
  • Costs less than the scrap one misaligned cut wastes
  • Steel pin and cone hold up to repeated use
What owners say: Reviewers say it does exactly what it claims and makes centering a sub-base straightforward, preferring the sliding two-piece layout over solid pins. The steel pin and cone hold up. Several suggest watching a setup video the first time.

Router Bit Sets

Sharp carbide does more for cut quality than any amount of router horsepower. Note that the two 30-piece sets and two 15-piece sets below are near-duplicates — read the buying guide above before choosing.

4.8/5 (1,124 reviews)  ·  30-piece carbide bit set  ·  Micrograin carbide tips, hardened shanks, organized case

The broadest set here, covering flush trim, rabbets, roundovers, ogees, coves and straight bits in one case. Micrograin carbide holds an edge substantially longer than plain steel, which matters most on plywood and MDF where abrasive glue lines kill cheap bits fast.

Best for: A first serious bit collection, or filling gaps across joinery and decorative profiles.
Skip if: You only need three or four profiles — buy those individually at higher quality.
  • Wide profile range for joinery and decorative work
  • Micrograin carbide tips for longer edge life
  • Hardened shanks for a secure, low-runout fit
  • Organized case protects the cutting edges
  • Highest-rated bit set here with 1,100+ reviews
What owners say: Buyers consistently mention how sharp the bits arrive and how clean the cuts are in both softwoods and hardwoods, and call the variety a real time saver. The organized case gets credit even though it is plastic. Some prefer premium single bits for high-volume production work.
Bosch 30-Piece Professional Set

Bosch 30-Piece Professional Set

4.7/5 (2,452 reviews)  ·  30-piece carbide bit set (Professional line)  ·  1/4” shank, carbide, easy-pick case inlay

Bosch’s Professional-line 30-piece set (part 2607017476), which overlaps heavily with the RBS030MBS — same 1/4” shank format, comparable carbide, similar profile spread. Compare the actual profile lists and the current prices rather than assuming one is the upgrade. Pick whichever is cheaper on the day you order.

Best for: The same buyer as the RBS030MBS — pick whichever is cheaper on the day.
Skip if: You already own a 30-piece set; there is little here you don’t have.
  • Broad profile range in 1/4” shank
  • Carbide edges for longer life and cleaner finishes
  • Case with easy-pick layout for fast selection
  • Large review base behind it
  • Professional-line quality control
What owners say: Buyers repeatedly mention sharpness out of the box and clean cuts across different woods, and value the profile range for tackling varied work without ordering singles. The case with its easy-pick inlay earns frequent praise. A minority prefer premium single bits for high-volume production.
Bosch RBS015MBS

Bosch RBS015MBS

4.8/5  ·  15-piece carbide bit set  ·  Micrograin carbide tips, tempered shanks, compact case

The 15-piece version of the RBS030MBS: the profiles most people actually reach for, without paying for the specialty cutters that stay in the case. Same micrograin carbide and tempered shanks, smaller footprint on the shelf.

Best for: A first bit set, or a trim router owner who wants coverage without bulk.
Skip if: You already know you need panel-raising or specialty profiles.
  • Covers the profiles used most often in edge and trim work
  • Micrograin carbide tips for longer edge life
  • Tempered steel shanks for a secure fit
  • Compact case for storage and transport
  • Good starting set before committing to a 30-piece
What owners say: Buyers mention sharpness on arrival and clean cuts across a range of materials, and value the selection for everyday trim and decorative work. Some prefer premium single bits for heavy production.
Bosch 15-Piece Professional Set

Bosch 15-Piece Professional Set

4.7/5 (681 reviews)  ·  15-piece carbide bit set (Professional line)  ·  1/4” shank, flush trim + chamfer + groove + profiles, protective case

The Professional-line 15-piece set (part 2607017473), the counterpart to the RBS015MBS. Flush trim, chamfer, groove and profile cutters on 1/4” shanks — the working core of a bit collection. Pairs especially well with palm and trim routers where 1/2” shank isn’t an option.

Best for: Pairing with a palm or trim router where 1/4” shank is all you can use anyway.
Skip if: You need 1/2” shank bits for a full-size router and large profiles.
  • Core profiles for edge work and joinery on 1/4” shank
  • Carbide cutters for longer life and cleaner finish
  • Case with easy-pick layout
  • Large review base for confidence
  • Best pairing with palm and trim routers
What owners say: Buyers note the sharpness on arrival and clean cuts across different woods, and call the profile selection a time saver over buying singles. The storage case is valued for keeping edges protected. A few recommend premium single bits for heavy production work.

FAQ

Which Bosch router should I buy first?
If you can only own one, buy a full-size fixed-base router — the 1617EVS is the standard answer. It handles table work, takes 1/2” shank bits, and does everything a palm router does, just less comfortably. If you already have a full-size router and mostly do edge work, a Colt palm router is the better second purchase: you will reach for it constantly. The PR20EVS is the cheapest Colt entry.
What is the difference between the 1617EVS and the 1617EVSPK?
The 1617EVSPK adds a plunge base, a carrying case, a quick-clamp base-swap system and coarse-plus-micro-fine depth adjustment to the same 2.25 HP motor as the 1617EVS. If you want plunge capability now or even later, buy the EVSPK kit and avoid buying a second router down the road. If you only ever work table-mounted, the 1617EVS saves the cost of the extra base.
Do I need a 1/2” collet?
For trim and edge work, no. For large profile bits, raised panels, and anything that removes serious material, yes. A 1/2” shank is four times as stiff as a 1/4” shank — less deflection, less chatter, a safer cut. Every palm and trim router here is 1/4” only; the full-size models take both.
Is a router table worth it?
For repeatable work, it is the biggest accuracy upgrade you can make. Small parts that are dangerous to rout handheld become straightforward against a fence, and profiles come out identical across a run. If you are doing one-off edge treatments on large panels, handheld is still easier — you move the tool instead of the workpiece. For a first table, the RA1141 is the portable option; the RA1181 is the flat, rigid choice.
What is the difference between the Bosch Colt palm routers?
All Colt palm routers share 1/4” shank, one-handed operation, variable speed and soft-start. The differences: PR20EVS is the 1.0 HP baseline and cheapest entry; GKF125CEN is 1.25 HP on the PR101 base; GKF125CEK is the same 1.25 HP router bundled with an edge guide and case; GKF125CEPK adds a plunge base; PR20EVSNK is the installer’s kit with the widest set of bases. Buy on power first, then on which accessories you would otherwise buy separately.
What maintenance do routers actually need?
Keep the collet and bit shanks clean of pitch and check tightness before each session. Clean resin off bits — a gummed-up cutter behaves like a dull one and overheats. Keep motor vents clear of dust, inspect brushes if you notice a change in performance, and on plunge routers keep the posts clean so depth doesn’t drift. Store bits in their case; edge damage from bits knocking together is the most common way people ruin new cutters.
