A workbench is the single most important thing you can build for your shop. It gives you a stable surface to work on, a place to clamp projects, and somewhere to mount vises and tools. Every woodworker remembers how much easier building got after they finally had a real bench.

Workbench Essentials

  • Height: Wrist height when standing โ€” typically 34โ€“36 inches. Too low and you'll hurt your back. Too high and you lose leverage.
  • Top thickness: At least 3/4" plywood laminated to 1-1/2" total for rigidity. A thick top absorbs hand plane vibration and doesn't flex under clamp pressure.
  • Vise: A face vise on the left end is the most versatile single addition. A leg vise gives more clamping area for longer boards.
  • Dog holes: 3/4" holes in a grid pattern allow bench dogs for clamping wide panels flat on the bench surface.
