Choosing the Right Workbench

Workbench Essentials
- Height: Wrist height when standing — typically 34–36 inches. Too low and you'll hurt your back. Too high and you lose leverage.
- Top thickness: At least 3/4" plywood laminated to 1-1/2" total for rigidity. A thick top absorbs hand plane vibration and doesn't flex under clamp pressure.
- Vise: A face vise on the left end is the most versatile single addition. A leg vise gives more clamping area for longer boards.
- Dog holes: 3/4" holes in a grid pattern allow bench dogs for clamping wide panels flat on the bench surface.
