Shop Workbench Plans โ€” Full-Size Benches for Serious Woodworkers

๐ŸŽฏ What's a Shop Workbench? A shop workbench is a full-sized, feature-rich bench designed for a dedicated woodworking space โ€” not a folding table or sawhorse setup. Think 8-foot long, thick laminated top, integrated vises, cabinet storage below, and dog holes for clamping.

Once you're past beginner projects and working on furniture or larger builds, you need a real shop bench. The difference between building on a basic utility bench versus a full shop workbench is like the difference between cooking on a camp stove versus a full kitchen โ€” both work, but one makes everything easier and more precise.

Plan 1: The 8-Foot Shop Bench with Cabinet Storage

The most popular full shop bench design. An 8-foot long top built from laminated 2x4s or a thick plywood sandwich, mounted on a base with two 3-drawer cabinets underneath. Total footprint: 8ft ร— 2.5ft.

  • Top: 1-1/2" MDF or 3-layer 3/4" plywood laminate โ€” flat, stable, sacrificial surface
  • Base: Two cabinet units on casters for mobility + locking
  • Storage: 6 drawers โ€” sized for hand tools, measuring tools, and power tool accessories
  • Estimated cost: $400โ€“$600 in materials
  • Skill level: Intermediate โ€” requires a table saw for ripping stock

Plan 2: The Torsion-Box Assembly Table / Bench

A flat, lightweight bench top built from a honeycomb of MDF ribs and a melamine surface. This design is popular for assembly benches because the surface is perfectly flat (critical for glue-ups) and the melamine doesn't stick to glue squeeze-out.

  • Top dimensions: 4ft ร— 8ft ร— 4" thick torsion box
  • Weight: ~60 lbs despite the large size โ€” much lighter than solid wood
  • Surface: White melamine โ€” non-stick, easy to clean
  • Dog holes: 3/4" holes on 4" grid โ€” full clamping flexibility

Plan 3: The Wall-Mounted Fold-Down Shop Bench

A space-saving design for shops that double as garages. The bench folds flat against the wall, giving you back your floor space when the car needs to come in. Deploys to a full 4ft work surface in 30 seconds.

  • Wall footprint: 4ft ร— 8in when folded
  • Work surface: 4ft ร— 24in when deployed
  • Load capacity: 400+ lbs on piano hinge and wall ledger

Adding a Vise to Your Shop Bench

A vise transforms a flat surface into a true workholding station. The two most useful vise types for a shop bench:

Vise TypeBest ForPrice Range
Face vise (quick-release)General clamping, dovetails, most tasks$80โ€“$200
Twin-screw viseWide panels, drawer fronts, cabinet doors$150โ€“$350
Leg viseLong boards, hand-planing, traditional work$200โ€“$500
Moxon vise (DIY)Dovetails, fine joinery โ€” sits on bench top$30โ€“$60
