Fixed Base vs Plunge Router — Which to Buy First?

The fixed-base mortise workaround — and why it is not recommended. You will find forum advice to tilt a running fixed-base router into the work. It has been done for decades, and one beginner’s guide calls it exactly what it is: imprecise and genuinely dangerous. The safer workaround is to drill a starter hole with a Forstner bit and lower the router into it — workable, but not how the operation was designed, and experienced woodworkers note it can produce a violent grab against a fence. If mortising is in your plans, that is a reason to own a plunge base rather than a reason to get creative.

Can a plunge router be used as a fixed base? Yes — lock it at depth and it behaves like one. Power matters more for dadoes than for edge profiles. A 2 HP router with a 1/2-inch collet handles 3/4-inch plywood dadoes in fewer passes than an underpowered trim router.
