A fixed base router is a motor locked at a height. You set the depth, switch it on, and slide it into the work from an edge. It cannot drop a spinning bit into the middle of a board.
A plunge router is a motor on springs. It hovers above the work with the bit retracted, and you push it down into the wood wherever you need to start the cut — then let it spring back up when the cut is done.

Can a plunge router be used as a fixed base? Yes — lock it at depth and it behaves like one. A common approach once you own several routers: buy a second bare motor or a second base so that one lives permanently in each. Power matters more for dadoes than for edge profiles. A 2 HP router with a 1/2-inch collet handles 3/4-inch plywood dadoes in fewer passes than an underpowered trim router. Edge profiling with bearing-guided bits is a light cut; a trim router handles it happily. Hogging a 3/4-inch dado through plywood is not. Match the class to the heaviest cut you actually intend to make.

Collet technique — the same on both, and commonly done wrong
- Insert the bit fully, then back it out about 1/8 inch before tightening. Bottoming the bit out can cause runout. Backing it off slightly lets the collet grip evenly along the shank.
- Tighten firmly with the collet wrench. Most routers need two wrenches or one plus a shaft lock. Never hand-tighten alone.
- Keep the collet and bit shank clean. A slipping bit usually means a dirty or improperly tightened collet.
- Do not store bits in the collet. Contributes to seizing and spring fatigue.
Feed direction
With a handheld router on the outside edge of a workpiece, move counterclockwise around the piece. The bearing-guided bit rides the edge and this direction keeps the cutter working against the feed rather than trying to run away with the tool. Reverse it on interior cutouts. Get this wrong and the router will climb-cut — pulling itself along the work in a way that is hard to control.
Depth of cut
Neither base gives permission to take the whole cut in one pass. Multiple shallow passes produce a better surface, put less load on the motor and bit, and are far more controllable. The plunge base makes this easier through its turret stops — that is exactly what they are designed for.
